I'm packing (yes, again) for a crazy few weeks on the road... I'll be live on PBS in Charlotte Sunday night (and my pal Leanne Ely of SavingDinner.com is coming to the studio with me, fun!), and Memphis on Monday night and then I head to Key West for a few days where the entire Virgin Clan is going to converge. One of my kids' Uncles rented some huge estate with outdoor showers, mango groves, etc. that belongs to a treasure hunter and a supermodel. After that I head to Tampa and then on to NYC. Talk about a tough trip to pack for!

I shipped my Virgin Diet Shakes ahead of me (I mixed chai and chocolate and added in some Extra Fiber), my Virgin Diet bars and So Delicious coconut milk so I am taken care of wherever I end up! Last time I ran out of shake mix on the road and tried to use something else I got hives!

I always love going to Tampa as my favorite restaurant of all time is there. It's Dr. Steven Masley's kitchen! Steven wrote the book Ten Years Younger and the Discovery Show of the same name and comes up with some of the most delicious recipes ever - last time I was there we had cioppino, quinoa with veggies and blueberry-lime coconut sorbet. Outrageous! He definitely inspired me to get more adventurous in my cooking which you will get to experience soon (well, sort of soon... February 18) when The Virgin Diet Cookbook is out. We just turned in the manuscript so it is fresh on my mind! And we have been planning which recipes we are going to cook up with the Virgin Diet recipe contest winners... I think I have it nailed down but it was hard to decide!

Can you believe it is August already? I had a book deadline and now I have another one so it really isn't feeling like a laid back summer though the trips to Kauai and Key West are helping. Plus I rationalized Key West by planning on picking up some Hemingway mojo to get into the writing spirit! Speaking of Hemingway, Mariel Hemingway and I are going to do a very fun cooking project together - stay tuned for that cuz you know I will be sharing it with you!

Okay, off to take Grant to the gym with me!

The 4 Steps Healthy People Use
to Turn Back the Clock on Aging

In my practice I meet many clients who dismiss an expanding waistline, brain fog, decreased libido, low energy, and other health issues as normal. “That’s the price of getting old,” they reluctantly say.

Yet I see people in their 30s, 50s, 70s, and beyond with active, vibrant lives. They enjoy fulfilling relationships, have great sex, travel frequently, and share a passionate zest for life.

Why do some people succumb to adverse symptoms while others enjoy lean bodies, abundant energy, passionate sex, and meaningful relationships as they grow older? I’ve looked closely at these healthy, happy people – many of whom are my clients, while others are friends – and determined 4 practices they employ to turn back the clock and prove that age is just a number:

  1. They eat an anti-aging diet. Every meal they eat contains fresh, unprocessed foods such as wild-caught, cold-water fish, berries, cruciferous vegetables, leafy greens, and high-fiber legumes. They snack on a handful of nuts every day. Best of all, they enjoy these foods, including an ounce of dark chocolate (with at least 70% cacao).

  2. They meet their unique nutrient needs. More than 80% of Americans are nutrient deficient, which among other problems leads to accelerated aging. Not these clients. They get optimal amounts of critical nutrients including omega 3 fatty acids, vitamin D, vitamin K, magnesium, and calcium. They take a professional-quality multi every day and meet their 30 – 40 gram fiber quota.

  3. They stay physically active. Beyond simply working out, these people optimize their workouts. They don’t spend hours on elliptical machines or doing aerobic classes. Instead, they combine burst training with weight resistance in just minutes a day. Many people fear heavy weights will make them bulky. Far from it: these folks use weight resistance to look lean and sexy, fight infections, and slow aging.

  4. They manage stress well. Everyone experiences some stress. A moderate amount gives you purpose and challenge. Trouble begins when you don’t manage it well. Chronic stress accelerates aging and decreases your performance. These folks have plenty of life stress, but they know how to handle it. They get adequate sleep, have fun, exercise daily, and enjoy peace and calm in their daily routines. They enjoy great sex, which produces a hormone called oxytocin, a terrific stress reducer. They share long hugs and tenderness with friends and family daily.

Virgin Diet Success Story

I started one of my many weight loss journeys January 2nd 2012 doing Weight Watchers. I started out at 221.4 lbs, size 18 or 20 jeans, size 3x or 4x shirt. Weight Watchers is a good program that allows you to eat the foods you want as long as it is within your point allowance. I did well for the first 8 months on the program, getting down to 172 lbs. However, with some life issues I fell off of the weight loss wagon through the rest of 2012.

In January I decided to get back on that wagon after getting back up to 192 lbs. In February I met you, you gave me your book telling me to try it, “It is just 3 weeks” you said. At first I was skeptical. How on earth can I do this and cut out all these foods I love. What do you eat? These were my thoughts. Looking at the food list I was sure I was not going to do the diet, however your book changed my mind. Reading your book made me realize why I should cut out these foods, and how it would be better for me, as well as my family if I could get them on board.

I started The Virgin Diet mid-February at 183.6 lbs. I am 150 today, wearing a size 8 jeans and a medium to large shirt. I feel that I probably have another 10 lbs to go, maybe 15 before I truly feel good about myself, however I am pretty proud of where I am at now. I am working out, I have followed your program by doing a shake for breakfast, a shake for lunch and then my dinner from the choices you suggest. I found out that I have a food intolerance to corn, by accident twice (both from not reading the label completely). I have yet to have peanuts, and stay away from artificial sweeteners except Stevia. I did not have a reaction to anything else.

I am 38 years old, I am close to the same size I was when I graduated 20 years ago. I have spent over half of my life overweight. After high school I was no longer walking everywhere, but driving – however still eating the foods I always ate. To look back and realize all the things I missed out on – cute clothes, activities, having confidence, it makes me angry at myself.  In the past 20 years I have probably spent 18 of those years over 200 lbs.

I love the new me. I know that I have been in contact with you throughout this journey but I really want you to know that I am so thankful for you coming in here in February and talking to me and giving me your book. It has changed my life, and I know that it will be a change I will take on for good. I feel so much better, healthier, confident. I no longer feel like I need to hide, I feel like a brand new person.

The picture on the left is of me 10 lbs heavier than what I was when I started my journey in January 2012. I don’t have many pictures of myself because I hated the way I was. The picture on my right was taken about 10 lbs ago – what a transformation. I look at this picture every day to keep me motivated and to help me see where I was, where I am and to know that I don’t want to go back.
